BIOMECHANICS
Physical Education
165

Instructor: M. Kathryn Scott

Physical Education 165 studies the basic biomechanical and anatomical concepts of human movement and their application to fundamental movement patterns, exercise and locomotor skills.

Students should have a basic understanding of human anatomy, physics and exercise and selected sports.

The scope of the course will include examining theoretical bases for the understanding and the development of skilled performance in a variety of human movement and athletic activities. It will also investigate the anatomical and biomechanical principles fundamental to an understanding of human capabilities in selected locomotor and athletic activities and, especially, to the application of such principles to the improvement of performance.

The course content will included such topics as:

  • The skeletal framework (structure, articulations, planes, range of motion)

  • The muscular system/muscular action

  • Moving and controlling the body under a variety of conditions

  • Fundamental manipulative skills
         Moving external objects
Receiving and controlling external objects and
            receiving the body's own force
         Variations necessitated by limitations

  • Anatomical concepts related to the performance of physical exercise

  • Analysis of advanced techniques
Increasing complexity of movements and the adjustments which are involved
Development of the ability to differentiate between individual differences
that both enhance and restrict performance
