About Sue Li Jue

Sue Li Jue recently retired as Director of the Physical Education Program on July 1, 2018 but will be helping with the transition to a new Director for the Fall 2018 semester. She has been a Lecturer at Berkeley in the field of dance since 1986, as well as the Artistic Director of her own contemporary dance company, Facing East Dance & Music. Her main area of expertise is in contemporary (modern) dance, but she is also well versed in classical ballet having instructed the beginning through advanced levels of both styles, along with tap, Dance Production, and Stretch, Strength and Alignment. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCLA and a Master of Fine Arts from Mills College and has been the recipient of numerous grants for choreography including the California Dancemaker Grant, James Irvine California Artist Advancement Initiative Grant, and grants from Zellerbach Community Arts, Alameda County Artsfund, City of Oakland Community Arts,William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, CA$H Grant, Puffin Foundation, and others.

Her dancers have won an Izzie award for Best Ensemble and was nominated twice for Best Set Design. Ms Li Jue has also contributed to the greater Bay Area dance community by serving on committees and boards such as: Asian American Dance Productions, WestWave Dance Festival, The Isadora Duncan Dance Award Committee, the Dance IS Festival, and the Vision Series. Ms. Li Jue is committed to the importance of movement in all forms (dance, exercise, sports) for all people-- especially students at Berkeley.
