Clara Rodriguez is artistic director and founder of AguaClara Flamenco, based in Oakland, CA. She holds a B.A. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA with a minor in Women's Studies, and has been training and working professionally in the flamenco community for nearly 30 years. Her early training includes Spanish classical dance, regional dances and Flamenco, with concurrent training as a classical concert pianist and flamenco singer. Clara has studied extensively in Sevilla and Granada, Spain with teachers Juana Amaya, Concha Vargas, Andres Marin, Ursula Lopez and a host of other master teachers. After several years training and working in the flamenco tablaos of Granada, she relocated to the SF Bay area in 2010 and established AguaClara Flamenco.
Clara has taught workshops throughout California and given classes through such organizations as DanceVersity, Zambaleta School of World Music and Dance, Flamenco Arts Festival, Sacramento Arte Flamenco, and Bay Area Flamenco Festival. She has held regular classes in her Oakland studio since 2012.
Her company AguaClara Flamenco has presented a host of full length productions, including Somos Tierra and Dialogos presented at the Cowell Theater and produced by the Azahar Dance Foundation in 2012 and 2015 respectively. In 2016 the company presented in the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, and in 2018 the company was commissioned for the 40th anniversary EDF at the War Memorial Opera House. AguaClara Flamenco has presented in the San Francisco International Arts Festival in 2016-2018 seasons.
Clara is frequently a featured soloist with the leading flamenco companies of the region including Yaelisa Caminos Flamencos, La Tania Baile Flamenco, and Theatre Flamenco. Clara performs regularly on the local flamenco circuit, with appearances at The Sound Room, Yoshi’s, Rhythmix Cultural Works, La Peña Cultural Center, Ashkenaz, Thirsty Bear Flamenco Room.
