The Physical Education Program (PhysEd) at the University of California, Berkeley is soliciting applications for a 100% time new Director/faculty member (Associate Teaching Professor) who will be actively working to uphold the quality and breadth of the Physical Education instructional program and participate in the development and implementation of the inter-departmental "Health and Wellness" minor, one of the elements supporting the Chancellor’s priority on the undergraduate experience. The Associate Teaching Professor, also termed "Lecturer with Security of Employment", series is a faculty series unique to the University of California system. This position has security of employment (parallel to tenure) and the candidate will be a member of the UC Berkeley Academic Senate with the associated rights and responsibilities. Potential start date is July 1, 2018 or January 1, 2019.

PhysEd is an academic program with the mission to provide instruction in the theory and practice of fitness-related activities, along with a variety of aquatics, martial arts, dance, yoga, wellness and sports activities for academic credit in a non-competitive atmosphere. Instruction is sequential and planned to develop and improve performance skills utilizing modern concepts taken from Kinesiology, exercise science, health and wellness, and to impart knowledge of these concepts in order to promote an understanding of the health benefits of regular exercise as an important basis for lifetime fitness. PhysEd’s core teaching program includes courses cross-listed with the Department of Integrative Biology focusing on human anatomy in motion and courses which fulfill the College of Letters & Science breadth requirements.

The Director will also be a key contributor to development of the interdisciplinary "Health and Wellness" minor. The minor approaches wellness as a dynamic balance between all aspects of our health, and challenges the student to see wellness as socially situated, and impacted by personal choices.

We seek candidates who have experience in teaching physical education activities and/or expertise in kinesiology, exercise science, study of human performance, health and wellness, somatic arts, or other related fields. A Ph.D. and/or M.D. or equivalent degree is required at the time of application. Documented experience in teaching physical education activities and/or demonstrated expertise in: kinesiology, exercise science, study of human performance, health and wellness, somatic arts, or other related field is also required at the time of application.

Serious consideration will be given to candidates with demonstrated excellence in leading change management in small to mid-size organizations and expertise in creative fundraising.
